All therapists work with adults in individual, couples, family, and group sessions. Jennifer sees children (8+) and adolescents while Lauren sees geriatric clients as specialty areas. In counseling, your therapist will work with you hand-in-hand to identify problem and goal areas to live a more fulfilling, relaxing, and healthier life. Their foundational approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy with other modalities listed on the About Us page. Jennifer provides mind-body or integrative techniques with the addition of yoga and other body-oriented exercises (e.g., relaxation, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, Somatic Experiencing [in training for practitioner level], meditation, expressive arts, etc.).

For more information on other mind-body practices, please look at our Yoga/Mindfulness web page.

Please note that the information discussed in therapy is confidential. With written permission, information may be exchanged. The only exceptions to this rule are: when there is intent of harming oneself, intent of serious bodily harm to someone else, prenatal exposure to controlled substances, or having knowledge of child, dependent adult, or elder abuse.

The Benefits of Counseling, Insurance and Employee Assistance Program Information, & What to Expect in a Counseling Session Follow Below

What are the Benefits of Counseling?

  • Having a better sense of yourself and your goals
  • Learning new and different ways to achieve your goals
  • Managing stress and other emotional problems effectively
  • Developing a holistic/integrative approach to caring for yourself: body, mind, and spirit
  • Improving communication with others—both expressing your ideas and listening to others
  • Establishing health boundaries with others
  • Boosting your self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Resolving inner conflicts and relationship issues
  • Re-inventing yourself and/or concept of family after major life changes (e.g., moving, new career, break-up/divorce, marriage, baby, blended families, death of loved one, etc.)
  • Recognizing and moving through resistance, self-sabotaging, or self-limiting behaviors in therapy and in your life—without disturbing the status quo, there will be minimal change
  • Being okay with emotions and sensations that come up in therapy or in your life outside of the therapy office—it is quite normal to have painful memories come forth; it is a natural part of the therapeutic process where you come to recognize that your shadow self (i.e., what we tend to deny about ourselves/what is holding you back from the life you want) wants to be healed

Insurances & Employee Assistance Programs Accepted

For counseling, we currently accept the following insurance carriers: Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO/HMO and Blue Choice, Cigna, Magellan, MHNetwork, TriCare, United Behavioral Health/Optum Health, and Value Options insurance and EAPs: ACI, Anthem (Blue Cross Blue Shield), Aurora, Carebridge, Cigna, ComPsych, Health Advocate, LifeWorks, Perspectives Ltd., United Behavioral Health, and Workplace Options. We also can provide you a superbill to submit to your insurance company if we are Out-of-Network. You can contact the office directly at 630-526-4325 to set up an appointment.

What to Expect During Counseling Sessions

Time-frame: Counseling sessions usually last 45-55 minutes and can be longer if needed and covered by your insurance. The number of sessions depends on your particular areas of concern, your goals for therapeutic change, and the amount of sessions your medical insurance company will allow. Please check with your medical insurance company regarding mental health benefits for more information so that we can provide you with the best treatment plan that maximizes your time. Usually a client will be in therapy for about a few to several months or more as it takes some time to settle in, build a working relationship with a therapist, and start working on your goals.

Content: We will discuss your current issue(s) that brought you to therapy, explore your past and how it relates to the present, and create action plans based on your short-term and long-term goals. Sometimes figuring out what your goals are and relating your past to the present can take a quite a few sessions. There are benefits and risks to looking at yourself as counseling will bring you face-to-face with whatever needs healing. With subsequent sessions, we will review your progress with chosen interventions and determine future steps.

Support and Participation: It is nice to know that someone can relate to your struggles and help you to personally grow from them. As a client, you will need to put effort into change. Change can sometimes be difficult but it requires active participation on the part of the client. The therapist supports this change by providing interpersonal connection, tools, and guidance throughout the process.

Counseling is a shared relationship and a microcosm (a smaller version) of what happens in your other relationships in the greater world. And, therapy provides you that safe environment to work through these issues by expressing your perspective and needs as well as transforming the limiting beliefs and actions into more adaptable ways of thinking, feeling, and acting in your life.

Counseling Approach: Our counseling style uses research-based methods such as:

  • mindfulness-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT with elements of ACT and DBT) and general CBT
  • trauma-informed practices including Somatic Experiencing, attachment theories, and hypnotherapy
  • integration of yoga and other Eastern therapies (meditation, self-applied acupressure, sound healing)
  • solution-focused, strengths-based, resource-building
  • individual, family, couples, and group settings
  • touch therapy for nervous system regulation

Each client will need or choose different types of care based on their presenting problems, and we tailor our approach with your preferences in mind.  We have many options for you and work from a trauma-informed perspective of client choice.
